Tourism
in the Kingdom is currently the subject of very active study and
development. The Supreme
Commission for Tourism works with NCWCD to develop biodiversity
based tourism centred around protected areas. Cultural and natural
endowments are at the centre of tourism attraction and tourism promotion
plans are developed with the sustainability of the these heritages
in mind.
The Hima (community managed protected area)system remains a legitimate
institution for customary use of biodiversity in areas where the
system has not fallen into disuse.
The business sector does play a significant role in environmental
protection, including biodiversity conservation and sustainable
use. The efforts of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, the
agency that manages industrial cities in the named places, may be
especially mentioned in this respect. The agency was duly awarded
the UNEP Sasakawa Environmental Prize for its conservation efforts.
The Seventh Development Plan also underlines the role of business
sector in conservation.
